Muscle Cramps: what are they, how to prevent them and how to relieve them

Muscle cramps are a common and painful phenomenon, especially during or immediately after exercise.

They are involuntary, sudden and intense muscle contractions, which cause severe pain and restrict the movement of muscle tissue. Correct prevention and early treatment are vital to prevent difficulties in daily activity.

The causes of muscle cramps are often multifactorial and may be related to a number of factors. Usually, they occur more frequently during the summer months, during periods of increased physical activity and when there is insufficient hydration of the body. Electrolyte deficiency, overwork and excessive exercise are also key causes of their occurrence. In addition, they may be caused by low haematocrit or anaemia, as well as by diseases of the nervous system.
